OMBUDSMAN ARE:

Navy Family Ombudsmen are a critical communication link between the Commanding Officer and family members. They must be the spouse of an active duty or Reserve member of the command. Ombudsmen are primarily information and Referral Specialists who help command family members gain the assistance they need to succeed as part of the extended Navy Family. Once appointed as the command Ombudsman, the volunteer receives standardized Ombudsman Basic Training (OBT). OBT provides the basic knowledge and tools necessary to be an effective representative of the command and an advocate for family members.

Ombudsmen volunteers are trained to serve as your family advocate. Your Ombudsman is a link between your spouse and the command.

Your Ombudsman is knowledgeable about the Navy and your local command. Take advantage of their knowledge to get the assistance you need.

The Ombudsman, however, is NOT a go-between for the Navy member/sponsor and their command, or a mediator between husband and wife. The Navy Chain of Command should be utilized to address problems between the sponsor and the command. There are many recognized agencies offering professional guidance in the area of personal relationships, such as Navy Family Services Centers. Your Ombudsman will refer you to the correct agency, if you desire.

HOW CAN AN OMBUDSMAN HELP ME?

Navy Family Ombudsmen are key resources for family members. Ombudsmen maintain current resource files with information on military and civilian community agencies that can help families solve a variety of problems, and successfully meet the challenges they face whether at home or on deployment. In addition to providing referral information, Ombudsmen can facilitate communication between the Command and family members. Ombudsmen publish or contribute to command newsletters and/or maintain care lines. Ombudsmen can also assist families in contacting the Command for a variety of reasons.
